MULTIPIN CONNECTORS
DL, ELCO, AND EDAC EXPLAINED
DL Connectors are manufactured by ITT CANNON, and are the best choice for all multipin applications. The downside is that they are expensive, but are well worth it. The difference is that DL's are "zero insertion force" connectors. The pins face each other, and then mate flat. This type of design has no wear and tear on the pins. Elco and Edac connectors have forked pins that meet at a right angle and are pushed together when mating. They will wear out if used heavily. For years most recording studios have been using Elco and Edac type connectors, along with some manufactures. Solid State Logic chose DL. So did the original API consoles. Recording studios rely on their connections. DL's are always my first choice.
Elco connectors have become hard to find, due to availability of stock. Edac connectors are easy to find. Unfortunately, I prefer to use Elco. There is a difference between them in the alignment of the pins. Pins seat better in the Elco. . I try to use true Elco connectors when I can. Edac makes the better hood. Go figure.
